Since signing onto Twitter, downloading Tweetdeck and following a few professional emarketing firms... I am a convert...

Whilst Australia seems to be well behind in the Twitter craze commercially, it is plain to see that it is starting to penetrate the media. Just watch Dave Hughes on the 7pm Project and see how many times he mentions Twitter as a self promotion tool.My colleagues and I have been using Twitter on and off for a number of months but it just hasn't gained traction for many Australian SMB's.

In the States, on the other hand, there is massive growth for Twitter. Here is a snippet from a Nielsen blog

Twitter.com continues to grow in popularity and importance in both the consumer and corporate worlds. No longer just a platform for friends to stay connected in real time, it has evolved into an important component of brand marketing. Unique visitors to Twitter increased 1,382 percent year-over-year, from 475,000 unique visitors in February 2008 to 7 million in February 2009, making it the fastest growing site in the Member Communities category for the month.  Zimbio and Facebook followed, growing 240 percent and 228 percent, respectively.

So I did some research as to how large corporations and some other marketing driven US firms are using the Social Networking phenomenom.

We provide local consulting services to Australian businesses that use a US product called Infusionsoft for and it interested me to see how a professional eMarketing and Marketing Automation softare company would marketing their own products on a worldwide level.

Having to deliver local technical services for the product on a regular basis means that I am subscribed to their email marketing lists. Interestingly, I don't feel like I am spammed by them at all.

I then started following them on Twitter to see how they interact with the market and their customers on a daily basis. You can follow them here to see an example...

Here you will see just how many posts go out per day. Competitions, product updates, news links, testimonials, new implementations, successes, and much more.

Now think about how YOU can distribute information to your client network.

TIP: Start by using it as purely an information distribution tool. Pricing updates, specials, new services on offer, tips on how to you use your product or increase the value of using your service... There are so many different reasons to get in touch with your customers. Rather than having a marketing person design a professional HTML email every time you want to get in touch with your clients en mass, Twitter provides the perfect service oriented alternative.
